About
I am a self-funded PhD student in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Bristol. My current research is focused on the impact of large-scale volcanic eruptions on prehistoric civilizations using the Bronze Age eruption of Santorini as a case study.
As my PhD project is at the interface of quantitative numerical modelling of volcanic hazards and archaeology, I am attempting to take a multidisciplinary approach to investigate currently unresolved research questions such as the seasonality of the eruption and the true extent of the aerial dispersal of tephra. By determining these factors it will enable constraints to be placed on the effects of the eruption on the contemporary societies.
Therefore, my main research areas of interest include the modelling of explosive volcanic eruption using advection-diffusion models, the interactions between hazards and society (in particular, prehistoric eruption and their role in influencing cultural continuity or discontinuity). I am also interested in processes of post-depositional tephra reworking in both terrestrial and marine contexts and Bronze Age Aegean archaeology such as Minoan and Cycladic architecture, religious practices, art and society.
